HALEY, Private John W., 17th Maine Regiment, Edited By Ruch L. Silliker THE REBEL YELL & THE YANKEE HURRAH. The Civil War Journal of a Maine Volunteer Camden, Maine Down East Books 1985 0892721863 / 9780892721863 First Edition Hardcover VG VG 311pp. Illus. in text. Sig. to endpaper. John Haley enlisted in the 17th Main Regiment in August 1862, for three years unless sooner discharged. (Discharged, shot or starved would have been more accurate, he wryly observed.) Though a reluctant soldier he went on to fight steadfastly in the Army of the Potomac, taking part in some of the most significant battles of the Civil War. There are many memorable images in his account, the bloodiest one-day battle at Sharpsburg (Antietam), the terror of all-out war, the boredom of drill and more drill in winter quarters while scurvy and dysentry take their toll. The journal stands out as one of the best memoirs of that eventful time ever published. Bibliography. Price:
