391pp. Original calf boards worn at corners, although the whole has been neatly re-backed in polished calf with raised bands and red morocco title label to spine. Two pages repaired but no loss of text, few pages dusty. Front blank endpaper contains contemporary 18th-century manuscript notes and the inside cover carries the bookplate of noted Scottish criminologist T.M. Tod. His Grace the Duke of Hamilton and Others were Plaintiffs and Archibald Douglas of Douglas Esq., Defendant. With an Introductory Preface giving an impartial and distinct account of this Suit. A rare copy of a report on the infamous Douglas Trial, probably the greatest civil trial affecting status ever heard in Scotland. The 'Cause' lasted for eight years and created a sensation.

256pp. Quarter calf with marbled boards, little rubbed at extremes. Gilt and decorated bands to spine, gilt titles on title label. Signature inside cover, o/w very clean internally. First published 1871. The story of the infamous Arthur Orton and his claim to be the Tichborne heir. The proceedings were destined to become one of the longest legal ordeals in British history. Finally Orton was judged to be an imposter and in 1874 was sentenced to ten years imprisonment. A nice copy giving a fine background to the case.
