229pp. NEWLY REBOUND in green cloth with gilt titles to spine, new endpapers. Original title page just a little chipped at edge. Two private library stamps. Few page corners lightly stained but not affecting any text, o/w pages very clean. Francis Valentine Cuthbert Shortis was indicted for the murder of John Loye and Maxime Leboeuf in Valleyfield, Quebec on 1st March 1895. The trial began on 1st October and ran until 4th November. Two men had been shot and killed in the office of the Montreal Cotton Company while a third victim survived. Charged with the murders was a young Irish immigrant known as Valentine Shortis. His mammoth trial was the longest on record at the time in Canada. Was it murder for robbery or was he insane? The defence of insanity and other important questions of law arose during the proceedings.
