THOMSON, Colin A SWIFT RUNNER. Alberta, Canada Detselig Enterprises 1984 0920490409 / 9780920490402 First Edition Hardcover Fine Fine 114pp. Illus. in text. A complex set of circumstances turned Swift Runner into a raging cannibal murderer whose crimes remain unequalled in Canadian history. Born in the Cree encampment in 1839 he had a good childhood, married and had five children whom he taught to be proud of their heritage. He became a trusted trader with the Hudson's Bay Company and in 1875 they recommended him to the North West Mounted Police as a guide. In the winter of 1878-79 whilst camping north of Fort Saskatchewan, a desperate lack of food plunged Swift Runner into despair at being unable to provide for his family. His growing dependence on alcohol and loss of confidence finally drove him into madness and led to the slaughter of nine people he loved - his wife, children, brother and mother-in-law. Index. Price:
