DE WOLFE, Elizabeth A THE MURDER OF MARY BEAN and Other Stories Ohio Kent State University Press 2007 0873389182 / 9780873389181 First Edition Trade Paperback Fine xi+203pp. Illus. in text. When the winter ice melted in April 1850, residents of Saco, Maine, made a gruesome discovery: the body of a young girl submerged in a stream. Thanks to evidence left at the scene, a local physician was arrested and tried for the death of Mary Bean (the name given to the unidentified girl) - the cause being a failed abortion. The trial revealed many secrets, from a poorly trained doctor, connections to an unsolved murder and the real identity of Mary Bean - a young Canadian mill-worker named Berengera Caswell. Also features two other accounts of Caswell's death, both fictional and printed in the 1850s. Sources and Index. Price:
