The writer of the Diary, born in New Jersey, was a skilled carriage maker and carpenter, travelling through the Midwest in the 1850s and organizer for the Know Nothing Party and the candidacy of Martin van Buren. He supported the Southern cause and in 1862 enlisted in the 40th Alabama Infantry Regiment, serving as a naval carpenter in Mobile. Taken prisoner just before the war ended, he spent 3 months in a prison camp at Point Lookout, Maryland. He records the anxiety of the prisoners after the assassination of Lincoln, the harsh living conditions and continual desire for repatriation. Bibliography and Index.
