1 STEUART, A. Francis, Editor THE DOUGLAS CAUSE.
Edinburgh William Hodge 1909 1st hardcover VG no jacket
247pp+illus. VG in green cloth with gilt titles, top-edge-gilt. Covers are just very slightly rubbed at edges. Foxing to fore-edge, endpapers and scattered to some pages. One of the scarcest trials in the Hodge series, this edition was the only one published and the trial did not go forward into the later Notable British Trials series. Probably the greatest civil trial affecting 'status' in Scottish law and no trial of its time created so great a sensation or aroused so much popular feeling. The Cause arose on the death, without issue, on 21st July 1761, of Archibald, Duke of Douglas and the efforts to prove the lawful heir lasted in all for eight years, eventually reaching the House of Lords.
