JOHNSON, Samuel A THE BATTLE CRY OF FREEDOM. The New England Emigrant Aid Company in the Kansas Crusade Connecticut Greenwood Press 1977 Reprint Hardcover Fine No Dj 357pp+illus.+maps. First published in 1954 by the University of Kansas Press. This study tries to clear up some of the confusion surrounding the early days of the Company and its influence on the events that led up to the Civil War. He also explains the relationship of the Company and its leaders to the Kansas Conflict, the Benson fight in Missouri and to national politics, including the launching of the Republican Prty. One hundred years before publication, Kansas Territory was opened to settlement and parties of Emigrant Aid Company settlers made their way to the area to launch the towns of Lawrence, Topeka and Manhattan. It recounts the role of the Company and the main happenings in the Kansas struggle down to the autumn of 1856 when Governor Geary brought relative peace to the region. Bibliography and Index.
