1 SAUERS, Richard A. ADVANCE THE COLORS! Pennsylvania Civil War Battle Flags. 2 VOLUMES SET.
Pennsylvania Capitol Preservation Committee 1987 & 1991 0818200901 / 9780818200908 First Edition Hardcover Fine Fine
xvi+303pp. Illus. in text. and xi+611pp. Illus. in Text. Published 1987 and 1991. Quarto sized. Two superb editions with numerous illustrations throughout, mainly in colour. In battle the flags were the rallying point when a regiment became disorganised and the usual command was for the men to close on the colors. When an advance faltered, the colonel would order 'Advance the Colors' to inspire them to follow their sacred flags. A large percentage of the Medals of Honour were awarded for actions involving the flags. In spite of the importance of Civil War flags, most state collections have been inaccessible to researchers. Thanks to the Capitol Preservation Committee, the Keystone State's flags have now been photographed and these two excellent volumes provide much needed information on the flags carried by more than 300,000 Pennsylvanians in the Civil War. Chapters include the background to procurement of the flags, their postwar history, the conservation programme etc. The second volume includes a combined Index. (Heavy item, additional postage will be required on overseas orders.
