1 SMITH, Albert THE MARCHIONESS OF BRINVILLIERS. The Poisoner of the Seventeenth Century. A Romance of Old Paris
London Richard Bentlery 1886 First Edition Hardcover VG
315pp+illus. Green cloth with gilt titles and decoration, little rubbed at corners. Small previous owner's label inside cover. Very minor foxing to endpapers. Marie-Madeleine-Marguerite d'Aubray, Marquise de Brinvilliers (1630-1676) was a lady notorious for poisoning her father, brother and two sisters in order to inherit their property, with the help of her lover, army captain Godin de Sainte-Croix. There were also rumours that she had poisoned poor people during her visits to hospitals. She fled, but was arrested, forced to confess - by means of the 'extraordinary question' of being forced to drink sixteen pints of water, then beheaded and burned at a stake. Well illustrated with fifteen plates from original etchings by John Leech.
