Robert Sawle Donnall was tried on March 31st, 1817 before the Hon. Sir Charles Abbott, Knt. one of the Justices of His Majesty's Court of King's Bench. He was charged with giving his sixty-year-old widowed mother-in-law arsenic mixed in some cocoa, from which she died a few days later. It was said the lady had also been taken ill a few weeks earlier when she had drunk coffee with her daughter and her husband. The accused denied the charges and the main in his household said she had also drunk the same coffee. The jury had to decide whether it was proved beyong doubt that he had in fact given her the poison that caused her death, or whether she had died from other causes.
