Cases cover A Double Life (a society man who carried on a secret criminal career); From the Bank to the Prison; A Clever Express Robbery; and Fragment of Highland History (a 18th-century case of a man held by Highlanders until he paid a ransom). Three lengthy stories from the extensive crime files of the Pinkerton Detective Agency - 'The Model Town and the Detectives'; 'Byron as a Detective'; and 'The Life of a Detective'. Originally intending to merely counter much of the negative press the agency had received and to dispel a few of the more spurious claims made by jealous rivals and dime novels, Pinkerton became a zealous and blatant self-promoter, pumping out a long string of books dramatising his and the agency's exploits.
