1 ANDREWS, Evangeline Walker, Editor, in Collaboration with Charles McLean Andrews, Farnam Professor of American History in Yale University JOURNAL OF A LADY OF QUALITY, Being the Narrative of a Journey from Scotland to the West Indies, North Carolina and Portugal, in the Years 1774-1776
New Haven Yale University Press 1923 Third Printing Hardcover VG No Jacket
341pp+illus. Grey cloth with marbled boards, a little rubbed at extremes, paper label dusty.Top-edge-gilt. Edges uncut. Neat pencilled inscription to endpaper, o/w pages very clean. The journal falls into four parts, dealing respectively with the voyage from Scotland to the West Indies; life and experiences in the West Indies and the voyage from St. Kitts to the Cape Fear River; life on the Cape Fear prior to the American War of Independence and experiences of Miss Schaw and her companions in Portugal on the way back to Scotland. The name of the diariest does not appear in the original manuscript and the editors had to research many archives in order to trace the careers of those who play the leading parts in the story. A fascinating account. Appendices include The Highland Emigration; The Martin Family; 'Olivees' and the Hamiltons; James Innes & Francis Corbin; James Murray and John Rutherford; Archibald Neilson; Captain John Abraham Collet, etc. Includes Index. (1st published 1921).
