Robert Carr (Ker), Earl of Somerset was a particular favourite of King James I from their first meetings in 1607 and was showered with gifts and favours. Carr was made a Gentleman of the Bedchamber and was renowned for his handsome good looks, if not his intelligence. Trouble came to him in the form of the beautiful Frances Howard, wife of the Earl of Suffolk. With the King's connivance she was able to obtain a divorce and marry Carr. Carr's best friend, Sir Thomas Overbury, strongly objected to the marriage and whilst he was confined to the Tower it was alleged that Carr's wife visited him and administered poison. By this time Carr was no longer a favourite of the King and was charged, along with his wife, with Overbury's murder.
