prelims+317pp+illus. Red cloth with gilt titles. Top-edge-gilt. Light ink stamp to endpaper, little dusty on fore-edge. Endpapers tanned.The case refers to the set of four trials in 1742-45 connected with the claim of James Annesley to be the legitimate son and heir of Arthur Lord Altham, as against Richard de facto Earl of Anglesea. About four months after his father's death, Annesley was kidnapped at the instigation of the Earl of Anglesea, sent to America and sold as a common slave. When he returned to Great Britain, his case was taken up with such vigour that a verdict was secured in his favour. The case was heard in Ireland but was included in the series on the basis that 18th-century law in Ireland was English.. This first edition was never re-issued and is difficult to find.
