1 HAFEN, Leroy R. & Ann W. HANDCARTS TO ZION. The Story of a Unique Western Migration., 1856-1860
University Of Nebraska Press 1992 0803272553 / 9780803272552 Reprint Trade Paperback Fine
328pp+illus. The amazing story of the men, women and children who struggled across America with handcarts - taken from contemporary journals, accounts, reports and rosters of the ten Handcart Companies. Leroy Hafen's mother, Mary Ann, was one of the pioneers and wrote of her experiences in 'Recollections of a Handcart Pioneer of 1860: A woman's life on the Mormon frontier' - the procession of Latter-Day Saints pushing handcarts from Iowa City and Florence, Omaha to Salt Lake City. Many of the three thousand souls who trudged across 1300 miles of prairie, desert and mountain were European converts to the Mormon faith. Some arrived safely, some died along the trail or got caught in storms in the Rockies and hoped to be rescued by parties sent out by Brigham Young. One of the most incredible events in the history of the West. Includes Index. (1st published in 1960 by A.H. Clarke).
