1 Zwinger, Ann JOHN XANTUS. The Fort Tejon Letters 1857-1859
Tucson, AZ University of Arizona Press 1986 0816509417 / 9780816509416 First Edition Hardcover Fine Fine
xxv+255pp. Illus. in text. John Xantus was a bit of a charlatan - he lied about his exploits, joined the U.S. Army under an assumed name and managed to alienate most of the people he met. Yet this Hungarian immigrant became one of the Smithsonian Institution's most successful collectors of natural history specimens in the mid 19th-century and is credited with the discovery of many new species in the American West. Working from Smithsonian archives the author has assembled Xantus' unpublished letters and her further discoveries shed additional light on the contradictions between his personal and professional lives. Bibliography and Index.
