1 COHEN, Annie B POOR PEARL, POOR GIRL! The Murdered Girl Stereotype in Ballad and Newspaper
Austin, TX Texas Press/American Folklore Society 1973 029276409X / 9780292764095 First Edition Hardcover Nr Fine VG
131pp+illus. DJ has only minor wear and a little browning, book itself virtually FINE with just tiny date stamp on endpaper. In 1896 journalists called the murder of Pearl Bryan 'The Crime of the Century'. From the day the body was found to the execution of the murderers on the gallows, the details of the crime fascinated reporters and ballad composers alike. Newspaper accounts presented the case according to stereotypes and the author demonstrates that both the press and ballad writers were both interested in the same details - both distorting the facts to accommodate a shared pattern of storytelling. The girl's headless body was not mentioned; they made much of Pearl's 'innocence' and they ignored one of the killers - only the lover belonged to their stereotype! A fascinating study. Includes Bibliography.
