Originally appearing on stage as a classical singer, Miss Arne appeared at the Haymarket Theatre which was under the banner of Theophilus Cibber and married him in 1734. Within two years she found fame as a serious actress. Her husband was a despicable character. In financial difficulties, he introduced his wife to a Mr Sloper, from whom he obtained money. When he fled to France, Mrs Cibber remained with Sloper only to be forcibly removed by her husband. In 1738 Cibber then brought a court case against Sloper as the 'wronged' party, but the adultery of the wife and connivance of the husband were revealed in court. Includes the Trial for Criminal Conversation and the second trial for 'Detaining the Plaintiff's Wife.
