Originally appearing on stage as a classical singer, Miss Arne appeared at the Haymarket Theatre which was under the banner of Theophilus Cibber and married him in 1734. Within two years she found fame as a serious actress. Her husband was a despicable character. In financial difficulties, he introduced his wife to a Mr Sloper, from whom he obtained money. When he fled to France, Mrs Cibber remained with Sloper only to be forcibly removed by her husband. In 1738 Cibber then brought a court case against Sloper as the 'wronged' party, but the adultery of the wife and conivance of the husband were revealed in court.
