He embarked on a highly adventurous journey with Englishman Charles Joseph Latrobe and the Swiss Count de Pourtales, to accompany Henry Leavitt Ellsworth, one of hte Indian commissioners, on a visit to the country west of Arkansas set apart for the emigrating Indians. The five journals of the trip in annotated form, tell the stories of his travels. He was especially interested in the mission Indian schools and conditions among the Indians - their customs, humour, folklore. Includes many glimpses of important frontier personages.
