1 REID, J. Arbuckle BATTLING WITH WAVES AND LAWYERS. A Genuine History of Perils of the Deep and an Authentic Record of the Most Important Shipping Case ever dealt with in the Supreme Courts of Australasia.
London Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. Ltd. c1900 Third Edition, Revised and Enlarged hardcover VG no dj
281pp+Photographs and engravings in text. Blue cloth covers with linen spine, dull green titles, little worn around edges, very light foxing to endpapers but o/w pages clean. Pages start actual numbering at 18 but all contents present, with preliminary photographs and Contents page unpaginated. A hard to find edition on the tragic events of 28th December, 1893, when the s.s. Alert ran into a storm and sank near Melbourne Heads, Port Phillip, Victoria. The only survivor was the ship's cook, Robert Ponting, who was found washed up on the beach at Sorrento. He was later able to describe the terrible events which led to the tragedy. This account is followed by stories of the subsequent claims made by families of the victims against Messrs. Huddart, Parker & Co. to recover damages for the deaths. It was claimed that the ship was not seaworthy. (In fact a mutiny by sailors on an earlier voyage had led to this being confirmed by a surveyor. Amazingly the wreck of the Alert was finally discovered in 2007). Well illustrated. A hard to find edition.
