1 RICHARDS, Benjamin B CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH MERCHANT. The Journal of Stephen Chapin Davis
San Marino, CA The Huntingdon Library 1956 1st hardcover VG not called for
xvi+124pp+map in text. Small mark to corner of front cover where label removed, but still a VG copy in striped cloth. In July 1850 a 17-year-old New England boy, Stephen Davis and his brother Josiah sailed from New York City bound for San Francisco and the California gold fields. They were just two of the thousands who journeyed to the Sierra foothills, but Stephen Davis' journal is unusual in that it sees the gold rush through the eyes of a merchant rather than a miner. He tells of four Panama crossings, the ships, the cost of goods and services and his own life in textile mills, at sea and in business. Includes Index.
