1 NUNIS, Dr Doyee B. Jr.(edited by) THE BIDWELL-BARTLESON PARTY - 1841. Californian Emigrant Adventure. The Documents and Memoirs of the Overland Pioneers
Santa Cruz, CA Western Tanager Press 1991 0934136327 / 9780934136327 1st Edition Hardcover VG VG
x+294pp+illus. A very nice copy of this edition telling the story of a determined party of men and women, including a Methodist minister and a group of Jesuit missionaries and their guide, who set out for the west coast of America in 1841. Crossing Kansas territory, the length of Nebraska and Wyoming, they encountered a tornado, hailstorms, Native Americans, stampeding buffalo and difficult river crossings. They survived on the last of their pack animals and even a coyote for food. The party included Nancy Kelsey, the first white woman to cross the Sierra Nevada mountains and they struggled into the San Joaquin Valley on 30th October, after six arduous months on the trail. Their first-hand accounts were published here for the first time. Well illustrated. Bibliography and Index. (Heavy item, may require additional postage on overseas orders).
