London M. Gurney 1806 First Edition Hardcover VG
197pp+folding map. FINELY REBOUND in half maroon calf with marbled boards. Edges uncut, rather dusty on fore-edge. Original worn plain card covers bound-in. Mr Isaac Blight lived in the neighbourhood of Greenland Dock, London and carried on the business of a Ship-breaker. One of his servants was the sister of Richard Patch and when he came to visit her she asked Mr Blight if he could stay the night. Patch told him that he was in distressed circumstances and was engaged to work for food and drink and later paid a salary as well. When Blight faced monetary problems, some property was put in Patch's name to avoid a creditor. However, Patch tied up money in a way which annoyed Mr Blight. In September 1805 Mr Blight was shot . Patch had apparently gone outside to the privvy at the time. He was tried, found guilty and sentenced to death. The folding plan shows the premises of the late Mr Blight.
