xi+224pp+illus. Blue cloth with gilt titles and decoration, little faded on spine. Top-edge-gilt. Some pages have not been opened and the book is very clean internally. Elizabeth Davis Bancroft was the youngest child of William and Rebecca Morton Davis and was born at Plymouth, Mass. in October 1803. She often spoke in later times of what good preparation for her life abroad were the years she spent at Miss Cushing's school at Hingham, and of her visits to her uncles, Judge Davis and Mr I.P. Davis of Boston. Her first husband, a brilliant young lawyer, died a few years after their marriage and in 1838 she married George Bancroft, the historian and statesman. In 1846 he became Minister to England and it was during that times that these letters were written. Includes over twenty plates. Index of Names.
