BARROW, Thomas C TRADE & EMPIRE. The British Customs Service in Colonial America, 1660-1775 Cambridge, MA Harvard University Press 1967 First Edition Hardcover NR FINE VG xii+336pp. Dj a little dusty. A series of Acts of Trade and Navigation were passed by the British Parliament between 1660 and 1696 in order to control most of the import and export of trade to the advantage of England. Initial enforcement was left to the colonial governors, but when this proved unsatisfactory, the English customs service was formally extended to America in 1673. But the colonists violated the laws continually and the individual customs officers were operating on their own, far from England with little authority or power. The last English customs official was driven from America in 1775 and the Revolution put an end to the colonial customs service and the First British Empire as well. Bibliography and Index. Price:
