An interesting collection of crimes from the South African writer, recounting police investigations and unrecorded incidents at the trials as leading barristers and detectives discuss their cases with him. Albert George Carr tells the author of his feelings when he was sentenced to death - the only man in South Africa to step straight into freedom from the shadow of the gallows. Also includes the first full account of the career of William Foster, South Africa's Public Enemy Number One who terrorised the Rand before his macabre death in a cave.

206pp+illus. A sensational case that has passed into South African legal history. Ronald and Susan Cohen, an apparently happy couple, were blessed with wealth and lovely children. In 1970 Susan was brutally murdered by someone in a frenzy and totally beyond control. Ronald was tried but the judge found "extenuating circumstances" and sentenced him to 12 years imprisonment. A vivid study of the crime and the husband's psychiatric and personal background, plus some other cases where extenuating circumstances were a dominant feature.
