Hallett'. When Sarah Cornell was found hanging from the frame of a haystack in Tiverton, Rhode Island, it might easily have been called suicide but for a note she had left saying 'If I should be missing, enquire of the Rev. Mr. Avery of Bristol - he will know where I am'. This was the beginning of the Reverend's troubles and one of the most famous 19th-century cases. Aside from the note, the most damning piece of evidence against him was the fact that he had been seen in the vicinity of the hanging but Magistrates dismissed the case against him. However, it was found that Sarah had been pregnant and it was assumed that Avery was to blame and had a good motive for murdering her. People became very threatening and Avery decided to disappear. There was an immediate hue and cry and he was finally brought back to face trial for murder. One of the rarer editions which includes all three parts in one volume.
