1 BOEWE, Charles PRAIRIE ALBION. An English Settlement in Pioneer Illinois
Carbondale Southern Illinois University Press. 1962 First Edition Hardcover VG Good
ix+317pp+illus. Dust-jacket just a little worn around edges. The attempt by Morris Birkbeck and George Flower to establish a settlement of English farmers and artisans on the raw Illionois frontier in 1817 is a little-known but fascinating episode in the story of Western pioneering. In its day, the settlement was a major attraction for English visitors, second only in popularity to Niagara Falls. This present volume tells the story in the actual words of the participants, providing an interesting story of the Old Northwest Territory with tales of travel, exploration, discussion of American social issues and observations on the American character, etc. Includes Notes on Sources.
