JACKSON, Joe & William F. Burke Jr DEAD RUN. The Untold Story of Dennis Stockton and America's Only Mass Escape from Death Row New York Times Books/Random House 1999 0812932064 / 9780812932065 First Edition Hardcover FINE Fine Dj xxiii+299pp+illus. Dennis Stockton arrived at Virginia's Mecklenburg Correctional Center's death row in July 1983, charged with "murder for hire" but insisting he was innocent. He began a diary which became his lifeline. When the "Mecklenburg Six" planned a mass breakout, he decided not to run but recorded the events in his journal. A local newspaper printed excerpts of his account, describing life on death row, the bribed guards, stashed weapons, jailhouse sex and more, Stockton was seen as a hated informer and suffered barbaric treatment for eleven years whilst battling to clear his name. The authors investigated his story and found it checked out. An incredible prison drama. Price:
