Based on the analysis of more than eight hundred autobiographies written by men and women born in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Most come from working people who had little formal education: some were very poor indeed but a few wealthier examples are included for comparison. Almost all are previously unpublished and came in response to appeals on radio and in the press for original material. A wealth of experiences and memories which provide some fascinating insights into the much neglected world of childhood history. Includes References.
