Andersonville or Camp Sumter, as it was known officially, was the largest of many military prisons established during the American Civil War. Built in early 1864, during the fourteen months it existed more than 45,000 Union soldiers were confined there. Of these almost 13,000 died from disease, poor sanitation, malnutrition, over-crowding or exposure to the elements. Captain Henry Wirz was tried and executed for these war crimes but he claimed he was "only following orders". The booklet is illustrated with photographs of the camp, executions, burials and memorials. The facsimile newspaper has an engraving of the scene at the trial of Capt. Wirze.
