Peerless horsemen, hunters and warriors, the Comanches were among the most powerful Indian tribes west of the Mississippi. Consequently when white settlers entered their country, slaughtering bison and taking their land, they fought back. The U.S. government then ordered the army to punish the Indians and force them on to reservations. A detailed account of the first major army expedition against the Comanches between the Mexican and Civil wars, which precipitated two major engagments, the Battle of Wichita Village and the Battle of Crooked Creek on May 13th, 1859.
