1 SIMMONS, William S. & Cheryl L., Editors OLD LIGHT ON SEPARATE WAYS. The Narragansett Diary of Joseph Fish, 1765-1776
Hanover & London University Press of New England 1982 0874512395 / 9780874512397 First Edition Hardcover FINE No Dj called for
149pp. The writing of Indian mission history has long focused on initial periods of contact when missionaries played crucial roles in culture encounter. Only rarely does any study go beyond those first years to give a glimpse of native people, both Christians and traditionalists, struggling to survive in a strange and hostile world. Examining the lives of 18th-century Christian Indians, the diary and letters of Joseph Fish provides just that sort of window into native life of the times. The original Diary is a series of seven manuscript books that he kept for the Commissioners of the Company for Propogation of the Gospel in New England, to account for his journeys and expenses whilst in their service as a missionary to the Narragansett Indian community in Charlestown, Rhode Island. A very nice copy in illustrated boards. Includes References and Index.
