The document, two hundred and sixty-two handwritten pages, profusely illustrated with original pencil sketches and wash drawings by its author, was discovered along with a companion volume of letters by the same man - Alfred Bellard of the Fifth New Jersey Infantry. Through pictures and prose he gives an unparalleled firsthand account of what it was like to be a private soldier in the Union army. A wonderful memoir.
