SKELLY, George THE CAMEO CONSPIRACY. The Real Story of the Cameo Murders. Wirral, Merseyside Avid Publications 1998 1st trade paperback FINE 307pp+illus. A very nice copy of the first edition. On Saturday, March 19th, 1949, the Manager of the Cameo Cinema and his assistant were brutally gunned down in a botched armed hold-up. For over half a century the convictions of George Skelly - who was hanged for the crime - and Charles Connolly went unchallenged by the courts. Following publication of this book, the case was referred to the Court of Appeal. The author reveals what really happened on that fateful night, how the two accused were framed by a corrupt detective and condemned by an amoral legal establishment. A story of unbelievable wickedness which resulted in the execution of one man and the false imprisonment of another. Also provides a fascinating insight into 1940s Liverpool. Price:
