96pp. Foxing to endpapers and final page little marked. Cover sl. creased. Not dated but the earlier editions published around the 1930s showed a price of 3d, whereas this slightly smaller format shows 9d. The story of the murder of Jonathan May who was attacked on July 16th, 1835 whilst on his way home from Moreton Fair in Devon. He was found badly injured on the Exeter Road and died the following evening. Two men called Edmund Galley and Thomas Oliver were tried for the crime. Galley protested his innocence throughout and even Oliver confirmed this at the trial's end. Oliver hanged but Galley was transported, but influential people fought his cause and he was eventually pardoned in 1879. A remarkable case. (The author's hardback edition of this case was published around 1936).
