1 PARKER, Theodore THE TRIAL OF THEODORE PARKER for the 'Misdemeanour' of a Speech in Faneuil Hall Against Kidnapping Before the Circuit Court of the United States at Boston, April 3, 1855, with The Defence.
Boston Published for the Author 1855 First Edition Cloth VG No Jacket
xx+221pp. Original maroon cloth little rubbed at edges. Gilt titles to spine. In May 834 Charles F. Suttle of Virginia presented to the Boston Commissioner a complaint under the fugitive slave bill requesting the seizure and enslavement of Anthony Burns. The unfortunate man was seized on the false pretext of burglary, imprisoned and later brought to court in chains, surrounded by sixty men serving as the Marshal's guard. When it was protested that the prisoner should be allowed counsel, the 'slave-hunters' protested. The author, who was present at the court, joined others in a meeting on 26th May and spoke out against 'kidnapping into slavery'. At the same time a disturbance broke out at the Court House where doors had been illegally locked and one of the Guard was killed. Parker relates the events and his attempts to right the wrongs being inflicted on human beings at the time.
