Wise was a wealthy merchant, renowned as a bookman, collector and compiler of a unique group of bibliographies and catalogues. In 1934 it was revealed that over fifty pamphlets by such authors as the Brownings, Swinburn, Kipling and Ruskin, whose rarity he had made known, were mostly forgeries. Taken from Wise's private papers, the author reveals the drama of the exposure. Appendix by George Bernard Shaw. Bibliography and Index.
