135pp+sketches by Reginald Marsh. Endpapers lightly marked, label removed from half-title. Dust jacket worn around edges but main titles still complete. The scandals of the astonishing New York law office which defended more than a thousand people indicted with murder and manslaughter, with clients including Bosses of the Bowery and Queens of the underworld. Finally closed down by the D.A. in 1907, the two men had been up to every trick of corruption, including lavish retainers from every criminal element in the city. They were, however, still viewed with some amused affection. (U.S. edition entitled "The Magnificent Shysters").
