Gilles de Retz (or Gilles de Rais) was executed at Nantes in 1440 and was the original of Blue-Beard in the Tales of Mother Goose. A very nice copy of this edition on the notorious French criminal whose exploits have been the source of terror and legend for centuries. In 1404 he was one of the wealthiest, most cultivated men of his time - Marshal of France, lieutenant general of Brittany and brave companion-in-arms to Joan of Arc. Although he maintained intense religious fervour, his crimes against young children brought him to the gallows and his achievements paled against the monstrous disclosures. Appendices cover Mother Goose Publications, Bluebeard Stories, the Mystery of the Siege or Orleans and Depositions in Civil Court against Gilles. Index.
