If she was guilty of all the deaths attributed to her (21) then she leaves the likes of Christie, Sutcliffe and West way behind. Whilst she now gives up her overall premier position to Dr Harold Shipman, Mary Ann still ranks as Britain's most prolific female serial killer. Tony Whitehead's book is a superbly detailed and illustrated study and although not fully defending Mary Ann, he does maintain that much of the direct evidence produced against her would be laughed out of court today or be deemed inadmissable. A fine new study of this infamous case.
