Following allegations of ill-treatment to prisoners under sentence of penal servitude in prisons in England for the crime of treason-felony, this report was commissioned by Parliament and presented in 1871. Looks at the treatment, diet, discipline etc. with twenty-six names listed in the Appendix, giving details of their place of birth, marital status, religion, sentence and prisons where held. The male prisoners were confined in Millbank, Pentonville, Chatham, Portsmouth, Portland, Woking, Dartmoor, Portsmouth and Brixton and females in Woking and Fulham. The full responses to a questionnaire are included giving prisoners views as well as those of doctors, gaolers and others involved in their daily life.
