Two volumes ix+340pp+illus & ix+355pp+illus. A very nice copy in half calf with marbled boards, black and gilt banded spine, gilt and red morocco title label. Barrister, judge, historian and conservationist, Henry Cockburn was born in Edinburgh in 1779 and was a member of a distinguished legal family. He became Solicitor General for Scotland in 1830 and in 1834 was raised to the Bench. On taking his seat as a judge in the Court of Session he adopted the title Lord Cockburn. A very nice copy of his 'diary' containing most of his major cases and events that took place in Scotland during his career. His court style was clear and precise and his conversational powers unrivalled by contemporaries. Lord Cockburn was also a noted conservationist in Edinburgh and the Cockburn Society is named in his honour. A very attractive set with Index in Vol.2.
