The author was teaching at a convent in Florence was asked to accompany one of the postulants back to her home in Kerala as she was suffering from chronic homesickness. The priest had refused to help but Nuns had paid the fares and asked her to find out what she could about the situation. She discovered that the church was taking these young girls from their homes and draining money from poor communities and families in a lucrative export trade. No-one would help or listen, so the story of the exploitation was exposed in the Sunday Times and finally the Vatican stepped in.
