The book is primarily biographical, built on the histories of eight central figures: Bret Harte, Mark Twain, Prentice Mulford, Ina Coolbrith, Charles Warren Stoddard, Joaquin Miller, Henry George and Ambrose Bierce, Also includes shorter sketches of some forty minor figures.
