A superb edition of paintings from John and James Bard, whose meticulous works are the main source of the history of steamboats and yachts which carried passengers and freights along the rivers and coasts. The twin brothers were born in New York in 1815. They taught themselves to paint and they became the greatest chronicles of the steamboat era, working for owners, captains, boat-builders and anyone who would commission a boat's portrait. The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia, produced a travelling exhibition that stimulated this book, aided by Anthony Peluso's - the leading authority on the work of the two brothers.
