In 1796, the man who was to become King of France began a three-and-a-half year journey through Europe and America. Louis-Philippe, his two younger brothers and his manservant dined at Mount Vernon with Washington, toured Niagara Falls and smoked a peace pipe with the Cherokee Indians. The diary of this journey demonstrates the king's keen perceptions, amusing anecdotes and aristocratic foibles. His brother, the Duc de Montpensier, was an excellent artist and he recreated much of the scenery of the new world on canvas. Very well illustrated including many beautiful coloured plates.
