Facsimile of "Californian" newspaper dated March 15th, 1848 included giving the first account of the gold discoveries. Folding title page in gold lettering. A trained and skilled historian, John S. Hittell became a popular lecturer and traveller as well as a writer but he always felt that the discovery of gold in the Sierras was the greatest event in Californian history and the text of this edition first appeard in the Century magazine of 1890. A very attractive edition on the momentous events. Well illustrated with list of artists where known.
