Dj just a little worn at edges. The editor went to the diary of the exiled Frenchman when he was working on his book 'Lydia Bailey' in order to gather information about French refugees who fled from San Domingo and France at the end of the 18th-century. But he found Moreau's comments on American life so valuable, that he and his wife translated the diary into English. The journal is filled with intimate details about life in America and discusses with candour the prevalence of divorce, cost of confinement, shameless behaviour of French emigres towards their American hosts, prudery of the average American woman, prevalence of prostitution and much more. Many of the subjects had not been mentioned before in narratives about early America. Introduction by Stewart L. Mims. Frontispiece painting by James Bingham. Includes Index.
